Perugia is the Italian Capital of the Environment
Until the Earth Day many events and initiatives have been planned with the aim to make the Umbrian town a place where to meet and talk about environmental issues on a national level
20 April, 2015
Perugia has become the capital of the environment. Until April 22nd, Earth Day, a dense calendar of events and initiatives make this town a privileged site to meet and discuss environmental national issues and policies focused on the Planet’s health. More in detail, there will be 12 days on specific issues, 14 events, eight congresses with 50 speakers, two free public transport days. In some of these appointments Assisi is involved as well with the objective, as the organizers explained, to create “a communication synergy of the unique values in the Umbria region”.
“This event is sponsored by many famous organizations like Anci for EXPO 2015 – said the deputy major Urbano Barelli – and it represents the opportunity to reflect on environmental themes and to show the identity of our town and of our region that are characterized by the action and the thought of Saint Francis and the politician and philosopher Aldo Capitini who was the first to organize the march for a brotherhood among the people, from Perugia to Assisi, giving the colours to the flag of peace. From this point onwards we wanted to continue following the path that will allow us to “make peace with the Earth”, not only symbolically. We start off with the ideas of these two big men who lived of a life disciplined by harmony and respect towards nature: we will then learn how to protect the environment and the society”.
The theme chosen by the Earth day network 2015 is “green cities”. For this reason Perugia candidates itself as a “workshop for intelligent models, inserted in a circular economy where ecology is the locomotive of the development”. The Earth Day Programme is one of the ten projects of the Environment Department of the Perugia Municipality that have been approved inside Perugia smart city: ideas and projects for the future. Earth Day was born in 1970 thanks to an initiative of John Fitzgerald Kennedy.
With this project Perugia starts positioning again its brand, placing itself among the most stimulating green and smart international cities. Perugia Municipality is a partner of this project together with Assisi and Anci per Expo 2015 in ccoperation with Regione Umbria, Anci Umbria, Arpa Umbria, Università degli Studi di Perugia, Usl Umbria 1, Camera di Commercio di Perugia, Amici della Terra, Arte&Parte Servizi alla Cultura, Associazioni Dimore Storiche Italiane, Associazione Guide Scout Cattolici Italiani, Associazione Nazionale Amici di Aldo Capitini, Centro Studi Aldo Capitini, Cta EcoBike, Cittadinanzattiva, Ecomuseo del Tevere, Fai, Fondazione Aldo Capitini, Fondazione Green Economy, Fondazione Kyoto Club, Fondazione Sorella Natura, Fondazione Umbra per l'Architettura, Garden Club Perugia, Gesenu, Gest, Icom, Istituto Conestabile Piastrelli, Istituto Nazionale Urbanistica, Italia Nostra Perugia, Legambiente Umbria, Movimento non Violento, Osservatorio Borgo Giglione, Perugia ieri, oggi e domani, Perugia Meteo, Rete della Pace, Slow Food Perugia, Techne srl, Umbria Green Card Wwf Umbria.
